Reading in a multi-sensory way!

Reading

Have you ever heard of WhizRead?

WhizRead is the app that will provide your students with another experience regarding reading in a second language -English in this case-, a multi-sensory one. The interface of this website is attractive and explains clearly the several options that the children have while using it. For instance, the young learners can choose what and how to read, get pronunication, context and definitions age appropriate and view a related image plus hear a related sound for a given word or phrase. I personally consider that it is a good way to foster reading in our class and present it as something fun and accessible for all.

Consequently, I have created an activity where the students have a free choice of reading, and after using this app to complete the meaning of the words of their text, they will talk about what they have understood and learnt from it. They could even share their stories in groups to other courses of our school and therefore, practise the story-telling as well.

WhizRead will also give tips and educational advice for teachers and parents on how to use it in the most efficient way for their children to take the maximum profit of it.

Take a look or sign in and tell me if it would be a resource that you would also use in your class! :)

Listen to short stories using the British Council page!

 Listening

Besides finding a broad range of resources in the website itself, LearnEnglishKids of the British Council is an initiative that collects stories in the form of videos. In these, the main key words are mentioned at the beginning and then a story is told. Here, the acitvity is about selecting a specific short story, such as Ali and the magic carpet and work on the activities and key words per groups, enhancing cooperation and listening skills. At the end of it, the students will make a drawing that synthesize the story they have listen to.

Thus, the young learners can activate their previous knowledge and pay attention to the new vocabulary that they are about to acquire within the story. Thanks to the animated cartoons of the stories, they are entertaining and attention-grabbing and allow the kid to reinforce his listening skills. They can also enjoy songs, poems and videos, that with the short stories will enhance their active listening and grammar development.

Check out the games that appear after the story and complete them to make sure you understood it properly. <3

Write your own quizes with Quizziz!

 Writing

I personally believe how powerful the ICT tool of Quizziz is in order to practise the writing of our students. The activity I have personally designed will cover the writing skills of the students in creating their own quiz for the rest of the class, in this case, within the topic How can we be envrionment-friendly?

Therefore, the goal must be making the quiz instead of completing it, as they use to do normally. Hence, the kids will learn how to formulate questions to their peers and present them in a pedagogic and didactic way: the quiz.

It is also a free software that only requires to create and account to start using it. Navigate through it and tell me what you think of it!

Duolingo is perfect to practise your speaking!

Speaking

Duolingo is the perfect app for learning all 4 main disciplines of English. In this case, we could use Duolingo with our students to emphasize the pronunciation and intonation of words since all the exercises are prounciated out loud and kids can repeat them.

The activity to undergo in our class consists on a challenge to level up from the first to the second level of speaking exercises that Duolingo provides us. When they have completed it, they will show to the rest of the class their speaking abilities after achieving the challenge and thus, every kid will learn by repetition the pronunciation of each new word.

This software can even rate the accuracy of the words spoken and has an attractive interface for the kids to use.
